Savant Syndrome
Savant syndrome is a mental disorder that can sometimes give remarkable and spectacular talents. This disease is extremely rare and occurs sometimes in people with autism or other mental handicaps. The main characteristic being a remarkable brilliance in contrast to the mental handicap. The occurrence is much more common in males with a ratio of six to one and skills can vary between three categories.
The exact cause of savant syndrome is currently unknown. Theories exist of causation by a change on genes or even injury to the brains left hemisphere with compensation occurring in the right hemisphere. The complete answer is not know at this time.
Savant syndrome is not in its self a disease with any known drawbacks. However, the diseases that usually accompany savant syndrome such as autism do require a certain level of treatment. Some believe training the talents that come with savant syndrome may be a form of treatment to give the patient some "normalcy".
